On Thursday 20th May 2021 thirteen members trekked across to Shepparton Botanical Gardens, estb in 2011. The former landfill site is being regenerated into a showcase of Australian native plants set amongst distinct themed gardens and bushland, that celebrate the history and diversity of our region. There are a variety of trails suitable for walking and cycling throughout the gardens. It is mainly run by volunteers, with one full time gardener from Shepp City Council, many natives have become established with lots of ongoing work, beautifully layed out pathways, edging, garden art, gabion walls and nature walks in the bushland and wetlands. We were shown around by 2 volunteers and shown where the propagation happens which they then sell for fundraising for the gardens. We then moved onto Belstack Strawberry Farm for a talk on biodynamic farming vegetable and strawberry practices. Peter Tacey spoke on how him and his wife had stopped using chemicals on their farm and their use of more natural forms of fertiliser such as sheep manure etc. We had some lovely scones strawberry jam & cream for lunch then a tour of the vegetable plot using lots of herbs and flowers for bee pollination no chemicals!! We were a bit late for strawberry picking as end of season loomed managed to buy some last of the crops. We then went to Flourish Nursery in Mooroopna for a talk on all things SUCCULENT. We learnt how to propagate, water and generally look after these plants with many new varietys shown to us, which of course we had to purchase!! In all we thoroughly enjoyed our day with some rain showers in the afternoon.
